Penalties Have Increased for 2016
If you can afford health insurance coverage in 2016 but don’t sign up, you may have to pay a penalty ($695 per adult, $347.50 per child – up to $2,085 a family, or 2.5% of family income – whichever is higher). And, without insurance, you’ll be financially responsible for all of your medical costs.

Examples: Family of 4 with household income of $42,000: 2.5% of income = $1,050, penalty = $2,085. Family of 4 with household income of $125,000: 2.5% of income = $3,125; penalty = $3,125.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverage
You will not be denied coverage because of a pre-existing health condition. Some of the essential health benefits on every plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace include:

  • free preventive care and wellness services
  • doctor visits
  • prescription drugs
  • hospital and emergency department care
  • lab services
  • chronic disease management
  • pediatric services

Medicaid Expansion and other Financial Assistance
In some states, Medicaid has expanded existing coverage. Even if your state does not expand Medicaid, government subsidies may be available depending on your income and other qualifications.
